SIBN EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENT
This profile is one that is dear to our founder A. D. Chafins’ heart. This is true because it involves a woman that works in some of the very streets that he grew up in. As many of you may know he grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and saw many of the same things that this author and motivational speaker writes and talks about.
It’s funny. There are those that go to prisons and counsel men and women. There are those that work with “at risk” teens. There are those that spend time working with young people in street gangs. Each of these people mean well but there is always going to be a barrier between them and the person that they are going to counsel. This unseen barrier is that of trust and credibility. The only way through the barrier is if the person doing the helping and counseling has themselves been in the shoes of the other person. Jean Miller has.
Author and motivational speaker Jean Miller has been on the streets of Detroit. She has been involved in the darker and unspoken pieces of Detroit and inner city life. She has been involved in things that to this day make her look back and shake her head. These things have caused her to lose herself, her family, and for a number of years her freedom. Her story can be found in the book “SUBURBAN SLUMS” a hard hitting straight forward look at street life by somebody who lived and survived it.
Many people would have given up and thrown in the towel. She however stuck it out. Upon release from prison she decided to take her experiences and use them to the benefit of others. She went back to school and got the necessary credentials to work with juveniles as well as newly released x- offenders. Her work has moved her to open a transitional housing program for these people. She is a substance abuse counselor with credentials to work with teens.
She is not a speaker that will sugar coat anything. She will tell it just as it is. Perhaps in some circles she may come across as a little rough. Its not meant that way. Its just reality – straight forward and to the point.

“Jean will be a good speaker in a number of different areas. First off she can be a tremendous example of been there done that for conferences targeted at helping men and women released from prison get back on their feet. Additionally for those at risk teens she can be a hard hitting eye opener. Lastly, she can be a great source of encouragement for those that are recovering from substance addictions.
I have spoken with Jean on different occasions and feel very confident that she has a heart to help and a desire to give back to all who need her help. I truly believe that she would be a powerful piece to any conference dealing with the issues mentioned above.”
